Create Your Future

Developing the knowledge, skills and resources to build the career you want

Unique to 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, Create Your Future is a personal and professional development programme which is compulsory for first year students.

During Create Your Future, you will hear from graduates from your course, explore different career options, learn about how to articulate your skills in applications and interviews, and explore the range of Career Zone opportunities that will help you to develop your skills throughout your degree.

Whether you haven’t started thinking about your future career plans and ideas yet, you have a clear idea in mind, or already have experience in a specific sector, Create Your Future is designed to support you. You will finish the programme with some practical next steps including an understanding of where you get the careers help you need, when you need it.

Create Your Future is timetabled for you over three weeks. The programme is made up of three components:

Workshop 1 is an in-person seminar workshop during which you’ll explore what you can do with your degree, the skills you’re developing and how your values and motivations may shape your future career decisions.

Taking place on Teams you’ll be guided through a skills analysis, giving you practical examples of times you’ve demonstrated skills which you can share with employers, or opportunities develop these skills.

During this in-person lecture-style session, the Career Zone will be joined by one of our Student Programme Assistants and an academic from your course who will share their insights with you, and help you build an action plan.

The content of Create Your Future is supported by a dedicated ELE page, which you can revisit at any time during your studies.

We are committed to supporting all students to participate in Create Your Future, and have implemented a series of reasonable adjustments, which can be found on the Career Zone policies page,’ Career Zone approach to teaching and learning’.

If you are unsure about any element of Create Your Future or how you might participate in the programme (whether related to wellbeing, accessibility, health, reasonable adjustments, access to campus for the workshops or anything else) email createyourfuture@exeter.ac.uk and we will provide support.

Create Your Future for second years supports you in taking your next steps as you think about your career and life beyond university. If you didn't participate in Create Your Future in your first year, don't worry, we will update you with the relevant information. If you did attend last year, this isn't a repeat of what you've already learned. We will take a moment to reflect on the previous year, look at successes and achievements and consider the skills you've developed before starting to plan for your second year.

Through a personalised action plan, we can help you to propel yourself to wherever you may decide to go.
