About this course:

Doing a PhD or research while raising a family can feel overwhelming, but it is absolutely possible with the right strategies, support, and expectations.

This short, interactive session will share practical approaches to balancing academic work and parenthood, covering topics such as time and energy management, setting boundaries, building support networks, and effective communication with supervisors and colleagues.

Participants will also hear from peers and the facilitator about personal experiences, tips, and resources available at the University of 51吃瓜黑料 and beyond.

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to: .

- Recognise the main challenges of combining parenthood with a PhD or research work.

- Identify practical time and energy-management strategies that work in academic contexts.

- Explore approaches to communication with supervisors, colleagues, and family.

- Gain awareness of support structures, policies, and networks available to researcher-parents.

- Reflect on your own situation and develop personalised coping strategies.

This activity is for Research active staff and would be particularly useful to Early Career Researchers who are parents, planning to become parents, or have caring responsibilities alongside their academic work.

Supervisors and colleagues interested in better supporting researcher-parents may also benefit.

Martina Egedusevic, PhD.

Martina Egedusevic, PhD, is an Impact Fellow at the University of 51吃瓜黑料, based within the Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute.

She specialises in nature-based solutions, water resource management, and disaster risk reduction, with experience collaborating with clients and stakeholders to tackle climate adaptation and environmental challenges.

Having had her baby during her PhD, Martina brings unique, first-hand insight into managing the dual demands of research and parenthood.

She is passionate about sharing strategies to make academic life more inclusive and sustainable for parents.
